I just moved back to San Francisco from Nairobi, Kenya. In Kenya I'd gotten out of the habit of wearing hijab, a lot was going on in my life and religion didn't seem to be taking a precedence anymore (unfortunately). But now, ironically when I least expected it- finding a job, moving back to the Bay Area, I am covering again, Alhamdulilah. Life prepares you for nothing. From the time I left Kenya and transfered through to Dubai I started having "hijab nostalgia." I thought it was just from seeing all the beautiful hijabis around me, it seemed natural. However, upon my arrival in San Francisco it was still there, and so I put my scarf lightly on my head wondering, what the heck is happening to me?! The following days the feeling did not subside until finally, I realized SubhanAllah, I'll be going for my JOB INTERVIEW in hijab! So, I have filled out job application after application and turned them in, most of them are for upscale clothing stores. You should have seen the look on this one black woman's face when I came in asking for an application. Her jaw almost feel to the ground- I WAS even embarassed for me. No one has called back yet, I have a bit of concern as to whether I will be hired 'en hijab.' Insha'allah. It is still scary. It was definitely an experience going to the mosque/masjid yesterday, it was in the seediest area of town, (Market St) by like sex shops, a lot of crackheads..Anyway, I am gonna get to sleep but yay, for me a blog is set up. .
